Excerpt from the "Foreword"

Written by Professor Thomas Lee, Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

"Why is it that our hard-working students, despite studying English for so many years, can only attain such a pitiful level of proficiency? We cannot blame the teachers for not teaching well, nor can we claim a shortage of language education resources, or attribute it to student laziness.

It is with great pleasure that I witness the publication of Less is More, Simple to Profound—Practice and Reflections on the Greenfield Sunshine English Integrated Pedagogical Method. This book brings together the deep insights of various experts alongside the practical experience of frontline educators. This pedagogical method clearly outlines a set of principles and philosophies for English teaching...

Many of these perspectives align completely with my own. For instance: in Hong Kong, primary school English teaching should be treated as teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL), and nurturing Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) is far more effective and necessary. Furthermore, English is an alphabetic language. Mastering phonics, vocabulary, grammar, and culture constitutes the three core dimensions of successfully learning a foreign language. Extensive reading and writing remain the sole paths to true language mastery."

Excerpt from the "Preface"

Written by the Editor-in-Chief

"Less is More: Less copying, fewer tests, and less rote drilling means teachers have more time to teach reading and writing, while students have more time to read books and play.

Simple to Profound: Learning is kept accessible during lower primary years to build a rock-solid foundation, allowing students to learn faster and absorb more during upper primary years.

By tracking a specific cohort of students, their passing rate in English assessments was successfully maintained at 85% or above from Primary 1 all the way through Secondary 3. By Primary 6, students were reading texts averaging 1,000 words and writing compositions averaging over 150 words—surpassing standard curriculum requirements. They also achieved outstanding results in solo and mixed-choir English poem recitations at the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival."
