Navigating the Challenges of Student Writing
Theory and Practice for Overcoming Writing Difficulties
Many students in Hong Kong dread writing essays, and just as many teachers dread grading them. Is writing truly that terrifying? How can we change this reality?
Teachers are often overwhelmed with daily teaching, forced to spend their hard-earned holidays grading student compositions—a process that leaves them physically and mentally exhausted. Is there a way to help students joyfully improve their writing abilities without adding to a teacher's workload?
Can Primary 1 students actually learn to write a full-length essay?
How can we transform essay writing into a meaningful parent-child activity, allowing the whole family to enjoy the pleasure of writing and communication together?
In the past, we collaborated with the Education Bureau to promote the "Joyful Writing Project," establishing a supportive learning environment and theoretical foundation for schools and students. Over time, the number of participating schools grew to over 200. We have since continued our research and conducted trials in various schools, organizing a series of innovative writing pedagogies.
This book presents the fruits of these years of research and practical application, detailing the following approaches:
-
Meaning-Driven Writing Pedagogy (The New Whole Language Writing Approach)
-
Communicative Writing
-
Creativity and Writing
-
Reading-to-Write Pedagogy (Driving Writing Through Reading)
-
Expression Skills Training in Writing Instruction
-
The Cognitive Processes of Writing Behind the Mind
These research findings represent a major leap forward for primary school writing curricula and teaching methodologies. They offer solutions to most of the persistent problems that have long troubled teachers, students, and parents. We are proud to share these successful outcomes with the public through this book.
