Literacy is the vital cornerstone for children to master a language. I deeply believe that enabling children to learn Chinese characters happily is a shared dream for countless teachers and all parents. We all hope that children can enjoy going out with their families on weekends and holidays, free from the agony of endless copying and dictation.
Admittedly, some primary school Chinese language teachers and parents in Hong Kong still hold onto traditional educational mindsets. They believe that "knowing a word" means "knowing how to write it from memory." As a result, teaching methods still heavily rely on copying and dictation, and the demonstration of learning outcomes remains largely restricted to paper-and-pencil assessments.
Over the past few decades, I have visited numerous regions locally and abroad to seek a joyful way for children to acquire literacy. Ultimately, by integrating several effective teaching methodologies from Mainland China, I developed the "Integrated Efficient Literacy Method" alongside a series of non-profit literacy teaching materials.
In 1997 and 1999, I was fortunate to receive sponsorship from the Hong Kong SAR Government's Language Fund and Quality Education Fund, which allowed for the continuous development of these educational resources.
Through recent classroom observations and visits to educational institutions, I am acutely aware that many frontline educators in Hong Kong have yet to break through the bottlenecks of Chinese literacy instruction. Therefore, I hope to consolidate recent research and observations through this book to once again share the new scientific concepts and practical approaches of the "Integrated Efficient Literacy Method."
