20 Years of Research and Practice: Continuous Development in Chinese Writing Instruction

The arbitrary nature and persistent difficulties of teaching writing must be addressed through scientific research and evidence-based, effective pedagogy. To achieve this, the author, Professor Tse Shek Kam, pursued advanced studies in Great Britain in psycholinguistics, language education, and linguistics, applying these interdisciplinary theories and innovative perspectives directly to writing instruction research and curriculum design.

The author and his research team designed numerous studies on writing instruction, which were trialed in schools by language teachers. In 2000, they consolidated these writing curricula, materials, teaching methods, instructional strategies, and assessments to implement highly efficient writing theories and designs across multiple schools in Hong Kong. Following twenty years of practical application, and in the spirit of continuous development, the author has integrated the latest educational theories, new tools, and fresh designs to publish this new volume.

The book is divided into two major sections:

I. Theoretical Framework

This section integrates psycholinguistics, language education, linguistics, and literature to demonstrate exactly how these disciplines can be applied to writing instruction.

II. Practical Application

This section contains a wealth of instructional designs that have been repeatedly trialed across different schools and grade levels, and are proven to be both effective and easy to implement.

  • Scaffolding Support: These instructional designs serve as a framework, allowing teachers to develop and expand upon these examples into joyful and effective learning activities.

  • Innovative Grading Methods: The book introduces a variety of new and efficient grading methods that reduce teachers' workloads, freeing up more time for them to design writing lessons and exchange writing experiences with their students.
